Major League Pickleball 2025: Exciting Changes and Expansion

January 28, 2025 – Major League Pickleball (MLP) is set to undergo significant changes in 2025, reflecting the sport’s rapid growth and increasing popularity. As pickleball continues to capture the hearts of players and fans worldwide, MLP is making strategic moves to enhance the competitive landscape and ensure the league’s long-term success.

One of the most notable changes for the 2025 season is the expansion of the league. MLP will now feature 16 Premier level teams and 6 Challenger level teams.

This expansion is a response to the growing interest in professional pickleball and aims to provide more opportunities for players to compete at the highest level. The Premier teams will consist of six players each (three men and three women), while the Challenger teams will have four players each.

In addition to the expansion, MLP has introduced several new rules and regulations to improve the structure and competitiveness of the league. One significant change is the shift to side-out scoring for doubles matches. This means that teams can only score points while serving, adding a new layer of strategy to the game. However, rally scoring will still be used for singles tiebreaker competitions, known as DreamBreakers.

Player eligibility has also been tightened for the 2025 season. To compete in MLP, players must now have a signed contract with the United Pickleball Association (UPA). This change aims to ensure a higher level of professionalism and consistency across the league.

Teams are required to drop at least one player from their 2024 roster, even if all players have UPA contracts. This rule is designed to keep the league dynamic and competitive, allowing for fresh talent to emerge.

The league’s management is optimistic about reaching profitability this year, thanks to the sport’s growing fan base and increasing interest from investors

The entry point for professional pickleball remains relatively affordable compared to other sports, making it an attractive option for investors looking to capitalize on the sport’s rising popularity

In a recent development, Major League Pickleball’s AZ Drive announced a new ownership group, including notable figures such as former NFL quarterback Jake Plummer and financial professional Jeff Tsao. This acquisition, valued at over $10 million, highlights the increasing financial stakes and interest in professional pickleball

As MLP continues to evolve, it is poised to play a significant role in shaping the future of pickleball. The league’s expansion and new rules are designed to enhance the competitive experience for players and fans alike. With more teams, stricter player eligibility, and strategic scoring changes, the 2025 season promises to be an exciting chapter in the story of Major League Pickleball.

Major League Pickleball’s 2025 season is set to bring significant changes that reflect the sport’s rapid growth and increasing professionalism. As the league expands and implements new rules, it aims to provide a more competitive and engaging experience for everyone involved.
