Pickleball Balls, Court Shoes and Essential Gear

Choosing pickleball balls and gear starts with your venue's court surface and preferred ball model, followed by supportive footwear. For sanctioned competition, confirm your ball model appears on the USA Pickleball approved list. Check what your local facility already supplies before buying your own setup equipment.

How do I choose a ball for my venue, and when does approval matter?

Ask your court organizer which ball model players use before buying retail multi-packs. Matching the local group's preferred ball gives you an immediate, practical standard for practice and rec games.

Paddletek describes indoor balls as having 26 larger holes and outdoor balls as having 40 smaller holes. USA Pickleball's 2026 rulebook permits every approved ball indoors or outdoors (rule 3.C.1).

For sanctioned tournaments, the Equipment Standards Manual requires an exact model listed on the official approved roster. Approval means the model is on the list, though different floor surfaces can still change how a ball bounces.

Recreational open-play sessions rarely require tournament certification, so local facility rules decide which ball is used. The ball table shows approved models and their listed designations.

Use this venue-to-gear checklist before shopping:

For example, an indoor gym session may supply both balls and portable nets. Confirming that setup beforehand can leave shoes and a paddle as your only immediate equipment purchases.

What distinguishes court shoes from running shoes?

Pickleball involves side-to-side cuts and quick stops, and a shoe made for that movement differs from one made for another sport.

AAOS says court shoes for sports such as tennis, basketball and volleyball are designed to provide stability in all directions. Its athletic footwear guidance recommends a shoe designed for your sport if you play it more than twice a week.

Try on potential shoes with the athletic socks you normally play in, verifying that your heel remains seated during movement. AAOS recommends keeping at least half an inch of clearance between your longest toe and the shoe tip.

A pickleball marketing label alone does not settle fit, comfort, or grip on your local playing floor. Check the shoe's outsole compound and your facility's non-marking rules before buying any pair.

Which accessories are essential, optional or venue-dependent?

Start your gear kit with a solid paddle, suitable balls, and supportive court shoes. Portable nets and line tape serve players setting up temporary courts, while many established facilities supply their own nets.

Carrying bags, replacement grips, and extra balls provide convenience as your weekly court time expands. Buy these items to match your actual equipment needs instead of picking an unfocused starter bundle.

Separate individual gear from shared supplies when organizing community sessions at a local park or gym. Assign clear responsibility for net systems, floor tape, and shared practice balls so players avoid buying duplicate items.

For home setups, consult Pickleball Court Planning before ordering any heavy hardware. Measuring available space takes priority over purchasing equipment, because perimeter run-off requires ample room beyond the net.

What should I check before buying a portable net, bag or court tape?

Verify a portable net's published specifications and tension hardware directly against official court dimensions. USA Pickleball's 2026 rulebook requires net heights of 36 inches at the sidelines and 34 inches at the center (rules 3.B.6 and 3.B.7).

Rule 3.B.2 puts net posts 22 feet apart, measured between their inside faces. Check how the portable system maintains center strap tension and confirm its base feet sit flat on your surface.

Before applying court tape, obtain permission from the facility owner and review the adhesive manufacturer's removal guidelines. Rule 3.A.4.e says lines should be 2 inches wide and one color, but a standard width does not prevent surface damage.

For gear bags, compare usable compartment volume, strap comfort, and dedicated shoe storage that isolates dirty court soles. Before marking any temporary court, consult the court planning guide to review total playing area and recommended run-off space.
